Mini-internship engages State Rep. Yarbrough
The latest CMS Mini-internship paired John Gianopoulos, MD, chairman of Loyola University’s department of ob-gyn with State Rep. Karen Yarbrough for an instructional visit to the ob-gyn unit and the Stritch School of Medicine.
Led by Dr. Gianopoulos, Yarbrough met with Richard Besinger, MD, head of maternal medicine, and other staff members and students. Many healthy discussions ensured on topics that included EHRs, medical school debt, tort reform, malpractice insurance, and health care reform.
The internship provided a quick overview of the “Epic,” EHR system, which Loyola uses. The hospital and university are both 100% paper free, according to Dr. Gianopolous.
Rep. Yarbrough sat in as Dr. Gianopoulos met with a patient carrying twins and whose pregnancy he deemed high-risk. The woman was seeking a second opinion.
Before the day ended, the state representative had also watched the doctor perform robotic surgery to repair a patient’s pelvic prolapse.
Dr. Gianopoulos then shared with Rep. Yarbrough departmental and hospital statistics and explained how the benefits of acquiring Gottlieb Hospital. He stated that Loyola looked forward to partnering with Access Living.
The mini-internship concluded with Dr. Gianopoulos expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to discuss healthcare reform legislation and other current topics in a meaningful way.
