Abortion Services Soar in Illinois from Southern States
Public Health
Abortions have increased dramatically in states like Illinois where they remain legal, according to a new analysis by The Guttmacher Institute.
In response to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision last year overturning Roe vs. Wade, the Guttmacher Institute, a research and policy organization focused on sexual and reproductive health that supports abortion rights, launched a new dashboard to track abortions.
When Roe was overturned, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker vowed the state “would remain a beacon of hope and an island for reproductive justice for all who seek it.”
In Illinois, there were 18,300 more abortions in the first half of this year compared to 2020. That’s a 69 percent increase, The Guttmacher Institute dashboard, unveiled Sept.6, shows.
